bio
Anna Silabrama (b. 1981, Riga) is a Latvian contemporary artist whose work bridges painting and philosophy. After completing her studies at J. Rozentāls Riga Art School, she graduated in 2007 from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts, earning a Master’s degree in Arts. Since 2022 she has been a member of the Latvian Artists’ Union. Anna has been actively exhibiting since 2007, with several solo shows to her name, and her paintings are held in private collections in Latvia, France,
England, USA, and Canada.

Her artistic language is rooted in abstraction, deeply inspired by Eastern philosophy — especially the Buddhist concepts of impermanence, illusion, and emptiness. Through layered textures, ethereal compositions, and subtle use of gold, she explores themes of transience and meaning. Airiness, delicacy of color, and carefully placed accents characterize her works, which invite viewers into a quiet dialogue where personal interpretation plays a central role.

Working primarily with acrylics and mixed media on canvas, Anna Silabrama seeks to create not only
visual but also emotional resonance, offering spaces for reflection, contemplation, and discovery.

statement
In my abstract paintings, I strive to reflect the variability, impermanence, richness, and beauty of this world. I am drawn to the language of abstraction because it offers the freedom of interpretation, allowing each viewer to bring their unique perspective to my work.

To create my paintings, I primarily employ acrylic paints, collage, and mixed media. My process unfolds in stages, as I meticulously build transparent layers that intertwine and flow into one another, culminating in a rich and complex painting surface.

My approach to painting is deeply intuitive; I surrender myself entirely to the creative process, letting my emotions and instincts guide each brushstroke and choice of color. This connection with my inner self allows me to convey impressions and experiences that transcend words.

Two significant sources of inspiration shape my artistic journey: the profound philosophy of Buddhism and the world of abstract expressionism. Buddhism's teachings on impermanence and the interconnectedness of all things deeply resonate with me, infusing my work with a sense of transience and unity. At the same time, abstract expressionism's emphasis on raw, unfiltered emotion empowers me to communicate my innermost feelings through the language of color, form, and texture.

Through my art, I aim to invite viewers to explore the boundless possibilities of interpretation, encouraging them to discover their own narratives and emotions within the ever-shifting tapestry of my abstract compositions. My hope is that, in this process, they may find moments of introspection, contemplation, and connection with the world around them.
